The Mental Minute

Most every golfer who has ever picked up a club, regardless of ability, knows the feeling of hitting a pure golf shot. Some betterplayers know the feelingof playing in the zone for extended periods. If you would like to learn the tools to help you do this more often, then this regular column in Triad Golf Today for the 2010 golf season is for you.

During my 10 years as a golf professional, I have asked many students what it is that allows them to play to their potential. The usual response is that it “just happens” or “I don’t know”, “when I feel confident” or “when I’m comfortable.” Most people know that they are in a different space but have no idea how to recreate it. It seems the harder they try the more elusive it is and the more mediocre their play.

Let’s face it, for many, the game can be frustrating. Imagine what it would feel like if you were able to learn how to get out of your own way. The best golf shots you ever hit are the ones where you make a decision, commit to it, and then execute it without further thought.

By developing a Mental Pre-shot Routine (MPR) you learn to move from thinking to doing. Make every great shot you hit from here on a result of executing a MPR. Make hitting great shots an intentional, purposeful choice, not one that happens by chance.

In the coming months I will share with you the important steps that contribute to helping you build this routine and how you can make 2010 your breakthrough year. In the meantime, try having fun by thinking less over the ball!
