SUMMERFIELD • April 10-11 — Casey Wilmoth birdied the first hole of a sudden death playoff to turn back Scott Harvey and win the 14th annual Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions at Greensboro National.
Wilmoth shot 71-72 and Harvey posted 73-70 in the 36-hole event. They finished three shots better than Addison Lambeth and Brent Pridgen. On the first extra hole, the par-4 first, Harvey’s 20-foot bid for birdie narrowly missed. Then Wilmoth, the club champ at Cedarbrook, rolled in a 12-footer to claim the victory and deny Harvey his second straight title.
Harvey’s Sedgefield team won the Interclub Challenge by one shot over Cedarbrook. In the closest ever competition in the 14-year history of the event, the top six teams were separated by only four shots. Pennrose Park finished third, two shots off the pace. Each club — represented by a foursome — counted the best two scores on each hole.
John Nieters, a member of the Tanglewood team, was tournament medalist with 142 (70-72). He captured the flight for players not eligible for the T of C by two shots over Payne McLeod of Pennrose Park (70-74).
Sixty-eight players and 16 teams competed in the tournament.
Full details will be included in the upcoming May issue of Triad Golf Today, which will be out on April 21-23.
