I’d never been to Clinton, North Carolina. But I knew of semi-private Cohere Country Club due to some of their legendary former members. That list includes longtime Carolinas Golf Association executive director Jack Nance, former UNC men’s basketball coach Walter Skidmore, and of course, former Raleigh News & Observer golf writer and Carolinas Golf Reporter…
For some of us, it seems the only way to find time to play golf, is to leave town. Otherwise, you’re chained to your responsibilities, family, work … whatever. I had a chance to play over the weekend, which means I took a trip. Went to Myrtle Beach, where I lived for almost a decade.…
Sugar Mountain Golf Club may be the best “short” course anywhere. The par-64 municipal layout that winds through the golf/ski resort community at 4,000 feet near Banner Elk offers some outstanding holes with beautiful views of the surrounding peaks, including Grandfather Mountain. And the poa annua/bent grass greens have typically been just as fast as…
Though the Pinehurst area includes about 40 golf courses, visiting golfers really don’t have many options for an upscale golf trip featuring spacious, luxurious accommodations, a choice of multiple top-tier courses and on-site dining — all only a mile or so from the historic Village of Pinehurst. The owners of a destination course just outside the Triad is combining two of the most popular trends in golf in a new golf facility. Tobacco Road Golf Club near Sanford announced that it soon will add a 12-hole, par-3 layout, named “The Matchbox” near the 12th and 13th hole of Tobacco Road, the Mike…
The recent warm weather has made it possible to play mountain golf a little early this year. Olde Beau Resort in Roaring Gap began a “soft opening” Friday thanks to the unseasonably warm early March temperatures. Mountain Aire Golf Club in West Jefferson, which has opened its doors during its offseason when conditions are favorable,…
