Forsyth Country Day takes Palmetto title

Forsyth Country Day School pulled off a double in the Palmetto High School Golf Championship, winning both the team and individual titles on March 30.

The Furies, who were runners-up in the NCISAA 3-A state championship last May, nipped Forestview High of Gastonia and Myers Park High School of Charlotte for the team title by two shots, shooting 307-295. Forestview, the defending NCHSAA 3-A champion, shot 312-292 and Myers Park, which finished third in the 4-A class last spring, posted 315-289. It was pretty much a three-way race among the 41 schools. Fourth-place Edmund Burke Academy, a top team from Georgia, was 35 shots back in fourth place.

Junior Ben Schlottman led FCD with 75-68 and he held off Forestview’s Will Blalock (74-69) in a playoff for medalist honors. Schlottman birdied the par-5 18th hole on Sea Trail’s Jones course to win the first playoff hole.

Eric Mitchell (77-74) and Gray Townsend (77-75) placed 11th and 13th for the Furies who also got key efforts from Tyler Hartley (first-round 78) and Jay Hunt (second-round 78).

Winston-Salem Reynolds finished fifth behind the strong play of Dillon Wilson (76-80), Justin Lang (80-77) and Jack Speers (79-78).
