Bassett course reopens, now Heritage Golf Club

Bassett Country Club, closed since Sept. 30, reopened with a new name on Nov. 15.

Heritage Golf Club is the new name for the course which has been part of the Martinsville/Bassett community since 1926. Mike Cochran, a native of Martinsville and a fixture at the nine-hole course as superintendent and head professional since 2005, is leasing the course from The Lester Group, which purchased the property this fall.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to operate this wonderful golf course and for the support of The Lester Group in making it possible,” said Cochran.

“It’s a whole new ball game for us, and we want to serve a larger area. So it’s appropriate to rename the course to recognize its history,” said Cochran.  “Golfers of every level are welcome here.”

Earlier this year, the course underwent extensive renovations and is now more player friendly.

“Golfers will find the course in excellent condition with bentgrass greens and bermudagrass fairways and tees,” said Cochran.

It is now totally public but will offer annual memberships along with daily fee play.
