Tobacco Road: Risky proposition turns into Sandhills gold
If you’ve ever golfed at Tobacco Road, it is hard to believe the Mike Strantz layout is situated just seven miles south of the hard red clay that once helped Sanford lay claim as the “Brick Capital of the World.”
You may see red after playing the difficult layout, but there is no clay to speak of, just tons of sand left over from an abandoned quarry.
And while averaging more than 33,000 rounds a year as the area’s “must-play” course for golfers from Canada to Michigan and beyond, it’s also difficult to fathom the building of the ultra successful Tobacco Road, a decade aga was considered a major risk.
