Former University of North Carolina-Greensboro professor Dr. Nancy Vacc has made a planned gift in the amount of $725,000 to establish the Vacc Women’s Golf Scholarship Endowment for the women’s golf program at the Greensboro school.
As the largest planned gift ever received by UNCG athletics, the Vacc Women’s Golf Endowment will provide a full out-of-state scholarship for women’s golf on an annual basis.
Women’s golf has a rich history at UNCG and participation in the sport dates back to before the university had an officially recognized intercollegiate athletics department. Notable players from the past include former LPGA players Marge Burns, Jenny Gleason, World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Carol Mann, H.B. MacArthur and Becky Morgan.
“Nancy’s remarkable generosity to UNCG overall and our athletics program is a testament to her genuine love for this university,” said UNCG athletic director Kim Record. “Through this scholarship Nancy is ensuring that educational opportunities at UNCG will be enhanced for members of the women’s golf team for decades to come.”
“This gift is a game changer for our program,” said women’s golf coach Janell Howland. “It will provide a significant boost to our scholarship level and allow us to bring even more talented young women to UNCG to receive a first-class education and play golf at the highest levels.”
Vacc, after completing her doctorate in curriculum and teaching at UNCG, joined the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1987. She received the UNCG School of Education Teaching Excellence Award in 1998. Her husband Nicholas taught at UNCG for 23 years and served as head of the Department of Counseling and Educational Development from 1986-1996.
“UNCG was such a special place for Nicholas and me,” Vacc said. “I am pleased to be able to provide support for future generations of wonderful student-athletes who play the game of golf at UNCG.”
