Nick Mathews of Mebane qualified for stroke play for Monday’s final round of the NCAA Championship at La Costa North in Carlsbad, California.
Mathews, an N.C. State golfer playing as an individual, shot 4-under-par 68 Sunday — only a 67 from Ethan Evans, playing as an individual for Duke was better — to post a 54-hole total of 2-over 218 and tie for 18th in the medalist standings.
North Carolina, tied for sixth in the team standings, advanced to the final stroke-play round for the top 15 teams. On Tuesday, the top eight teams will advance to the match-play bracket to determine the champion.
Wake Forest finished 16th, two strokes from making cut at 29-over 893. Illinois lead the team race at 2-under 862, six ahead of Virginia and 11 on top of Vanderbilt. Adam Wallin of Ohio State is the individual leader at 5-under 211. Peter Fountain leads UNC at 217.
UNC Greensboro’s Kelvin Hernandez shot a second straight 80 Sunday and finished at 235. No Wake Forest players advanced. Michael Brennan and Tom Haberer finished at 222, missing by one stroke.
