WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. • Sept. 4-6 – Stanhope Johnson of Greensboro fired rounds of 69, 70 and 73 and finished second in the American Junior Golf Association’s Woodward Video Junior at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia.

Johnson, a junior at Bishop McGuinness, held the lead after two rounds but was passed by Brendan Connolly of Castle Rock, Colo., who shot 70 in the final round.

Johnson finished alone in second place, two shots clear of the third-place finisher in the 99-player field. He had 13 birdies in the three rounds, including two over the final seven holes. A bogey at the 16th left him two shots back of Connolly, who built his lead by playing the front nine in 3-under. Connolly bogeyed the final hole but escaped with a one-shot margin.

Davis Womble of High Point shot 75-75-74 to tie for 25th.

Joe Cheves Junior

MORGANTON • Sept. 11-12 – Davis Womble of High Point and Andrea Robbins of Pleasant Garden notched top-10 finishes at the eighth annual Joe Cheves Junior Invitational at Mimosa Hills Country Club.

Day, who shot 71-68, needed one extra hole to turn back a couple of players from South Carolina. Day, a N.C. State recruit, made a routine par in the playoff while both Taylor Zoller of North Charleston and Caleb Sturgeon of Larens ran into bunker difficulty on Mimosa Hill’s 18th hole.

In the girls division, Robbins shot 76-71 to finish seventh, just six shots back of second place but 12 shots behind the torrid pace of Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn. Martindale, who has signed with Vanderbilt, shot 68-67 to shatter the tournament record by six shots.

Victoria Allred, a freshman at Reagan High in Pfafftown, shot 79-78 to finish 17th.
