Mebane native Nick Mathews of N.C. State, shot 65 Wednesday at Finley Golf Course to finish second in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and gain the sole individual slot in the upcoming NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California.
Mathews’ 65 matched the low round of the tournament and gave him a 12-under 198 for 54 holes, one stroke behind medalist Austin Greaser of North Carolina, who posted 66 Wednesday.
The Tar Heels shot 20-under 820 for the tournament to finish third and earn one of the five championship berths. Clemson won with 815, one stroke on top East Tennessee State. Georgia Tech was fourth at 823 and Baylor shot 825 to edge Alabama by one stroke for the final qualifying slot.
