0

The college golf season is here for major programs in North Carolina.

The UNC men, impressive in a second-place finish in a powerhouse, 18-team field earlier this month in Hawaii, begin play Monday in The Prestige, a 24-team event including Stanford, Pepperdine and Northwestern at PGA West in LaQuinta, California.

The Tar Heels enter the 54-hole event after shooting a school-record 59-under-par total at Mauna Lani North in Hawaii. Oklahoma State won the tournament by five strokes. Rounding out the top five were Texas, Auburn and Oregon.

Cary native Hampton Roberts, opened the tournament with 11-under 61 and eventually lost a playoff for medalist honors. The rest of the UNC lineup consisted of brothers David and Maxwell Ford, Austin Greaser and Grant Roscich. Keaton Vo and Ethan Paschal replace Greaser and Roscich this week.

The N.C. State men, who won the Battle at Brier’s Creek earlier this month in Charleston, South Carolina, begin play Monday at the 12-team Watersound Invitational in Panama City, Fla.

Michael Vick shot 7-under 209 at Brier’s Creek to tie for medalist honors. Nick Matthews of Mebane tied for sixth at 211.

The 12th-ranked Wake Forest women got off to a slow start Sunday at the 54-hole Moon Invitational in Melbourne, Florida. Wake was 11th in the tough, 17-team field after Sunday’s opening round.

Florida State, the leader, shot 2-under 286 to lead Wake by 11 strokes. Carolina Chacarra led the Demon Deacons with 73. Macy Pate, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, shot 76.

Don Padgett II and David Eger have been selected for induction to the Carolinas Golf Association Hall of Fame, the CGA announced Thursday morning. The 2025 ceremony will be March 22 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Padgett (pictured) served as president and CEO of Pinehurst Resort and Country Club from 2004 to 2014, an era that included two U.S. Opens and a U.S. Amateur at the resort.

“Padgett’s visionary leadership was especially evident during the 2014 U.S. Open when he played a key role in the restoration of Pinehurst No. 2, returning the course to its historic roots,” Pinehurst President Tom Pashley said in a CGA release. “This restoration not only earned Pinehurst the Green Star Award for Outstanding Environmental Practices by Golf Digest, but it also ensured that Pinehurst No. 2 remains one of the most sought-after courses for golfers of all generations.”

As a player, Padgett won the Indiana Open, Indiana Amateur and Indiana PGA Section Championship and played from 1972-1974 on the PGA Tour. He also won the Ohio Open and was low pro three times at the PGA Championship.

Eger’s list of amateur achievements included winning the 1988 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, two victories in the Men’s North & South Amateur and several other prestigious national amateur events.

A Charlotte native, played in 58 PGA Tour events before transitioning to a career in golf administration. As a key figure with the PGA Tour, Eger served in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President of Tournament Operations. He also served as the USGA Senior Director of Rules & Competitions from 1992 to 1995.

Morgan Ketchum, a junior from Winston-Salem, shot 6-under-par 210 for 54 holes at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate at Hammock Creek in Palm City, Florida, as Virginia Tech overwhelmed a field of mid-major competition.

Ketchum shot 69 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in second place, two strokes behind teammate Valentine Delon. Four Tech golfers finished in the top five, including Mebane’s Emily Mathews, who finished at 215 after a final-round 70.

With an 22-under 842 total on a 6,134-yard course, Tech finished 36 strokes ahead of second place Little Rock in an 18-team that included UNC Greensboro and Elon.

Kelly Zhao of Elon was the lone non-Tech player to crack the top five, placing fourth at 214. Kasey Mcilvaine closed with 69 and led UNCG at 217.

Myrtle Beach event to announce new title sponsor

0

The second-year PGA Tour event in Myrtle Beach apparently has a new title sponsor to be officially announced at a news conference scheduled for Feb. 18 at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, site of what is now known as the Myrtle Beach Classic.

ONEFlight International, a private jet service, has been reported as joining the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as a title sponsor in a three-year deal that will run through the 2027 event. The tournament previously revealed it had reached a verbal agreement with ONEFlight.

The tourney, which has a $4 million purse — about half that of a regular Tour event such as Greensboro’s Wyndham Championship — is scheduled for May 8-11, the same week as the Truist Championship. Tournament operator SportFive has told media that in the future it is interested in elevating the event to a regular event on the Tour.

A signature event with a $20 million purse and a limited field, the Truist has been moved to Philadelphia this year because normal host Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte is playing host to the PGA Championship. The PGA Tour typically schedules smaller purse events on weeks when its top players are playing signature events or major championships.

Triad course flips sides to original routing

0

A municipal Triad course has flipped its sides back to its original routing.

Jamestown Park Golf Course swapped the numbering of its front and back nines as a means to smooth operations. As a result, the ninth green is now a short distance and in easy view of the pro shop.

Jamestown Park pro Marcy Newton said the change was made near the end of 2024. Both finishing holes are par-4s.

With the change the 18th green is now farther from the pro shop behind the cart building. Newton said the current routing is the same as when the course opened in 1974. A first change allowed the course to finish next to the pro shop.

Young caps wild week with late TV eagle

Cameron Young rolled in a long eagle putt on No. 15 at TPC at Scottsdale during Sunday’s CBS telecast of the Waste Management Open and finished in a tie for 12th at 13-under-par, 11 shots behind runaway winner Thomas Detry.

Young, who played at Wake Forest, had a wild week, with six bogeys and two double bogeys despite his strong performance.

On the back nine Sunday, Young also made three birdies, somewhat offset by bogeys on 11 and 16, the short par-3 surrounded by stands for 20,000 spectators. At No. 16, which played to under 130 yards, Young was 3-over for the week, including a double-bogey Thursday.

Former Wake star moves up leaderboard in Scottsdale

Cameron Young birdied four of the last six holes Saturday at TPC at Scottsdale in Arizona to move into contention entering Sunday’s final round of the PGA TOUR Waste Management Open.

The 27-year-old former Wake Forest golfer shot 5-under-par 66 for a 9-under 204 total for three rounds. Despite moving up 22 spots on the leaderboard with his round, he still trails leader Thomas Derry by nine strokes.

Young is only four shots from Jordan Spieth and three others tied for second place. He’s only one shot behind World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Young failed to take advantage of the course’s infamous stadium par-3 16th, making par on the 126-yard hole.

J.T. Poston, a Hickory native and former Wyndham Championship winner, joined Young in a seven-way tie at 204 that also included Justin Thomas. Akshay Bhatia, who lives in the Triangle, is at 203.

Closing Triad range continues to thrive

Country Club Driving Range isn’t expected to be in operation much longer at its current location, though the timetable for the closure remains uncertain.

Regardless, Forsyth County golfers continue to patronize the golf facility on Country Club Road in west Winston-Salem near borders with Lewisville and Clemmons.

The range was filled early Friday afternoon — covered and open areas — and cars had to create their own spots on the far west side of the gravel parking lot.

Though business owners Chris Marriott and Ricky Lyons have acquired the needed zoning to build a new facility in Lewisville, they have not yet begun the project. They currently lease the property on Country Club Road and have been given notice that they will not be offered an extension.

In addition to the range, Country Club has a large pro shop filled with equipment. Marriott and Lyons are PGA of America members.

Marriott and Lyons said they did not know when Country Club will close or when they will move to the planned new facility.

Tommy Pegram, who ran the Country Club Road facility for many years, will handle creation of the new facility. Marriott said the new facility will be state-of-the-art with added features and a large pro shop, and will remain focused solely on golf with no restaurant or bar.
